In most cases, the cough is caused by a virus which cannot always be treated with antibiotics. It fixes itself.
Nevertheless, previous studies have shown that 48% of doctors in the UK recommend taking antibiotics for cough or bronchitis.
Dr Susan Hopkins, Deputy Director of Public Health England, said: “If the human body becomes resistant to antibiotics, it can be a big problem. We need to take action now to reduce the use of antibiotics.
Dr. Suzanne hopes that these new guidelines will play a major role in reducing the rate of antibiotics in prescriptions.
He believes that physicians should reduce their dependence on drugs and encourage patients to take care of themselves.
Professor Dame Sally Davies, England’s chief medical officer, has already warned of a subsequent reaction to the antibiotic.
If antibiotics fail to work, the treatment of the disease becomes more complicated, he said.
At the same time, general medical procedures such as cancer and organ transplantation would be extremely risky, said Professor Dame Sally.
